What is a Mutual Fund?

A mutual fund is mainly an investment fund which is managed by professional managers who pools money from several investors to invest in the bond, stocks and money market fund to generate returns for their client.

What are various types of Mutual funds?

There are different categories of mutual fund for different investor offered by various AMC’s (Asset Under Management).

  • Debt: Debt mutual fund schemes mainly invest in the government bonds, debentures, and fixed income assets.
  • Equity: These funds are invested in equity stocks or share of the company.
  • Hybrid: These types of funds invest in mix instruments such as stocks and bonds.
  • Tax saving mutual fund scheme: These types of fund provides tax benefits under the section 80C of the Income tax act 1961 by investing in equity with having a lock-in period of 3 years.

What are the prime ways of investing in Mutual Fund?

There are mainly two ways of investing in Mutual Funds i.e. SIP Investment or Lumpsum Investment.

SIP Investment: SIP refers to the Systematic Investment Plan, in which investors can invest in the mutual fund over a regular interval of time.

Lumpsum Investment:  A lump sum investment is done when a large sum of money is invested by the investor in one go.

What are the different types of Mutual fund Plans?

There are mainly two types of mutual fund plans. One is regular and the other is Direct. In regular mutual funds plan, the investor pays a certain amount to brokerage fees to the broker, whereas in the Direct mutual fund plans the person can directly buy the mutual fund from the mutual fund company. What is growth and dividend options?

Growth Options: When the pay-out is made at the redemption of the units, then it’s called an investment made under the Growth options. The NAV on the date of the investment will be its cost price and the NAV on the date of the sale becomes the selling price. The difference is your returns.

Dividend Options: When the pay-out to the investor is made from time to time apart from the payment at the time of the redemption, then it’s called an investment made under the dividend options. The interim payments made under the scheme are known as dividends.

What are Mutual fund ratings?

A mutual fund rating is basically telling about the fund historical risk-adjusted performances over a different time frame as compared with the fund in the same category. There are various rating agencies such as CRISIL, Morning Star and Value Research which provides an independent rating to the Mutual Fund based on various factors.

What does the rating of Mutual Fund signify?

A mutual fund rating helps an investor to quickly identify the mutual fund, which is good for investing depending upon the investor risk appetite and capital. The rating agencies look for various things such as historical performance, consistency, Fund Manager and their portfolio.
